After finishing my M.Sc. degree at the LSE, I joined
WBES in 1981. In 1982 I was promoted to the WBSES
and joined Chandannagar College. From 1987 onwards
I have continued as Senior Professor of Economics
at Presidency College.
I have served as Head of the Economics Department
of Presidency College from 1993 to 2000 and again
from 2005 to date. From 2001 to 2005 I served as the
Principal of this great institution.
From 1987, I have gained a lot of experience in teaching
economics at the Honours and General level and from
2002 onwards at the Post Graduate level at the college.
I teach a number of topics to the PG students of Applied
Economics.
My primary interest is in Micro theory, Statistics,
Mathematical Economics and International trade.
My area of research interest is on economic liberalization
and its impact on the Indian economy. I am primarily
interested in the effects on economic inequality,
employment and output. I have Prof. Pulak Majumdar
doing post doctoral work with me in this area.

Globalization and its effects on the Indian
economy – with particular reference to the effects
on economic inequality and employment in the current
scenario- possible policy recommendations
Ongoing Research Projects
Currently guiding Prof. Pulak Chandra Majumdar
on a D.Litt. project to be submitted at C.U. on the
effects of economic liberalization on the Indian economy.
