M.Sc. course in Physics was introduced in this college in the late nineteenth century. Many well-known Indian Physicists were associated with this department as teachers or students – Jagadish Chandra Bose, Amal Kumar Ray Chaudhuri, Ashoke Sen, Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya (Ex-Director, TIFR), Amitava Ray Chaudhury (Director, HRI), Bikash Chandra Sinha (Director, SINP), to name a few. The department has three lecture theatres, seminar rooms, spacious well-equipped laboratories and a seminar library. The total floor area under the occupation of the Physics department is about 3380 sq. m.
