HISTORY OF THE LIBRARY |
|
 |
| |
Shortly after the establishment of Hindu College,
the authority felt the urge to start a college library for
students. From the very beginning of the college, books and
slates were given to the students. The students used to return
those books to the college after the completion of their courses.
The college authority preserved those books. This system was
in vogue up to 1924. From that year the college fee was introduced
and students had to collect their text books on their own.
But after their examination all students donated their books
to the college. With this rapidly growing number of donated
books the college library started. It can be said that, the
cultural and educational life of 19th Century’s Bengal
owes much to the Hindu College and its library. Most of the
eminent thinkers and gifted personalities of Bengal are the
students of this college. The college library played an important
role in forming as well as strengthening their personal views
and ideas through its rich collections. |
