| The Department of Geography, Presidency
College started functioning in 1949 – 50 with Prof.
Dr. N. R. Kar as Head, two Lecturers, Dr. A. B. Chatterjee
and Dr. S. P. Dasgupta, one Demonstrator, Sri R. K. Basu,
one Draftsman, Sri G. C. Roy and one Bearer, Md. Ramzan
Ali. Initially, intermediate, pass and honours courses were
introduced with part - PG facilities. Seminar Library was
set up in the late 1950s. It contains about 1500 Titles
and back–volumes of several national and international
journals. The Geographical Institute, a society of the students
and scholars was formed in 1970. Each year, it organizes
seminar lectures, classroom debates, PG students’
seminar, and holds inter-college Geo–Quiz competition,
and exhibition of Field-Photographs. It also celebrates
annual Reunion of its members, and arranges outdoor picnics,
1/ 2 – day excursion, and field study projects. It
publishes TRAVERSE as an annual periodical, and brings out
wall magazine, photo corner, and bulletins. It also gives
away Prizes to the toppers in examinations. Full-fledged
independent P. G. Teaching began in 2001 and subsequently
in 2004, academic autonomy was awarded and new syllabus
with new vision was introduced. The department is well-equipped
with learning resources, which are enhanced and enriched
every year. Finally, it has a brilliant galaxy of ALUMNI
comprising eminent Geographers in India and abroad.
