| The English Department of Presidency College
has a distinguished history of illustrious teachers, formidable
scholars and talented students. Though the Department was
formally constituted in 1909-1910 by Principal H.R. James,
the traditions of teaching go back to the legendary Henry
Louis Vivian Derozio, appointed Master of English Literature
and History in the Hindu College in 1828. Teaching in this
department covers undergraduate and autonomous (academic)
postgraduate courses.
