| This Department was established in the
year 1900 by Acharya Subodh Chandra Mahalanobis with the
co-operation of the then Lieutenant Governor of Bengal,
Sir John Wo'odburn. In 1901 Bachelors (Honours) course in
Botany was started. The first batch of regular students
obtained the M.A. degree in Botany from Presidency College
in 1907. Currently, the Department runs undergraduate and
autonomous (academic) post graduate courses in Botany. Recently,
the department has established five research laboratories
including one well-equipped laboratory of PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY.
